Look for a completed backup

Start with what you would miss: photos, documents, settings or a game save. Then identify the backup method for that data. A switch marked on is not the same evidence as a recent completed backup.

On iPhone or iPad, open Settings, tap your name, then iCloud and iCloud Backup. The date and time beneath Back Up Now show the last backup. To make a new one, tap Back Up Now and stay connected to Wi-Fi until it finishes. Check the completion time before starting the update.

Treat game saves separately

Check whether the individual game supports Steam Cloud on its Steam store page. In your Library, right-click the game, select Properties and check the Cloud setting under General. If Steam reports a sync error, resolve it before launching. For a save conflict, compare the timestamps with your last session before choosing a version.

Where a game officially supports manual save backups, follow its documented location and copy the files to a separate folder. Give the copy a clear date. Do not delete the original to test whether the copy works.

Keep one small record

Note the current version, backup time and where the backup lives. After updating, confirm that your expected files or progress are present before discarding an older copy. This modest record makes a recovery question much easier to answer.
