A new name for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre

The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders have announced a new identity: the Highlanders. MLB’s November 7 report confirms the change for the New York Yankees’ Triple-A affiliate in the International League.

The franchise continues to be based at PNC Field in Moosic, Pennsylvania. Fans searching for team news and merchandise will encounter the Highlanders name and newly unveiled branding.

What the identity draws on

The name refers to the Yankees’ early history. The New York club was known as the Highlanders from 1903 through 1912, reflecting its elevated ballpark location in upper Manhattan.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre’s new visual identity combines that connection with northeastern Pennsylvania’s outdoors. MLB describes a backpacking bear, campfire imagery and home uniforms with pinstripes.

What happens to Champ

Team president Sean Reilly says mascot Champ will remain as the club adds another mascot. The name change follows the franchise’s earlier Red Barons, Yankees and RailRiders identities. Use the club’s official channels for the new identity and future game arrangements.
