A new paid option for eligible Insiders

Microsoft opened a cloud playtime preview on October 21 for Xbox Insiders without an active Game Pass subscription. Eligible players can buy a fixed number of streaming hours, with a wider rollout planned for November. Microsoft has not announced a specific November launch day.

The change adds an ad-free paid route alongside the free, ad-supported streaming test announced in July. It does not mean every Xbox account can buy time today, or that a time pack includes a Game Pass game catalog.

The introductory prices

The US announcement lists three introductory packs: 10 hours for $3.99, 25 hours for $7.99 and 50 hours for $11.99. Microsoft says purchased playtime remains available until it is used.

Dividing each pack price by its hours gives approximately 40 cents, 32 cents and 24 cents per hour, respectively. Those figures compare fully used packs. The largest pack costs more upfront, so its lower hourly rate only helps if you expect to use the extra time.

You still need an eligible game

Paid streaming time does not replace game ownership. Microsoft requires a purchase of a cloud-playable game, except for selected free-to-play titles. A supported device is also required.

Before buying, check that your intended game is eligible, your device is supported and your account can access the preview. Microsoft warns that purchasing options, games and features can differ by market, device, account eligibility and preview ring. The US prices should not be treated as a confirmed price list for other countries.

How it differs from the free test

The July test let Insiders stream selected owned games with ads before each session and one-hour session limits. Microsoft says the new paid packs remove ads and offer shorter waits and high-quality streaming. Those are the company's service claims, rather than results of an independent performance test.

For someone deciding whether to try it, separate the streaming charge from any game purchase. Confirm both costs and eligibility first; buying more hours will not make an unsupported title playable.
