Which Senate candidates have won?
The Associated Press has called races for the Senate winners listed below. This is a selection of verified calls as of 9:58pm EST on November 3 (02:58 UTC on November 4), with new arrivals separated from sitting senators who retained their seats. It is not the complete national result or state certification.
North Carolina changes hands in the Senate race
Democrat Roy Cooper has won North Carolina's US Senate election against Republican Michael Whatley, according to the Associated Press. AP declared the race at 8:23pm EST on Tuesday, November 3, equivalent to 01:23 UTC on Wednesday, November 4.
This is a Democratic pickup: the seat was held by Republican Thom Tillis, who did not seek reelection. Cooper is a former North Carolina governor.
Ager flips North Carolina's 11th House district
Democrat Jamie Ager defeated Republican Jennifer Balkcom in North Carolina's 11th Congressional District, according to AP. Its winner call came at 8:53pm EST on November 3, equivalent to 01:53 UTC on November 4.
The district was held by Republican Rep. Chuck Edwards. This is a Democratic pickup in the House, separate from Cooper's Senate victory. It does not by itself determine which party controls the House.
Georgia and New Hampshire are holds, not additional flips
AP also called Georgia for Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff over Republican Rep. Mike Collins. In New Hampshire, Democratic Rep. Chris Pappas defeated Republican former Sen. John E. Sununu, AP reported.
Pappas succeeds retiring Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen. Georgia and New Hampshire therefore remain in Democratic hands; those victories are different from North Carolina's change of party.
New senators: Stratton, Hageman and Hern
Illinois: Democrat Juliana Stratton defeated Republican Don Tracy and will replace retiring Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin. Stratton is currently the state's lieutenant governor. The Senate seat stays Democratic.
Wyoming: Republican Harriet Hageman defeated Democrat James Byrd and will succeed retiring Republican Sen. Cynthia Lummis. Hageman moves from the House to the Senate; the seat stays Republican.
Oklahoma: Republican Kevin Hern defeated Democrat N'Kiyla Jasmine Thomas, according to AP. Hern moves from the House into the Republican-held Senate seat temporarily occupied by Alan Armstrong.
Alongside Cooper, Pappas and Barr, these are new arrivals to the Senate. A new person winning a seat does not necessarily mean that the seat changes party.
Republicans hold Florida and Kentucky Senate seats
AP called Florida for Republican Ashley Moody over Democrat Angie Nixon at 8:34pm EST on November 3 (01:34 UTC on November 4). Moody won the remaining two years of the Senate term originally won by Marco Rubio in 2022.
In Kentucky, Republican Andy Barr defeated Democrat Charles Booker for the seat held by Republican Mitch McConnell, according to AP. That call came at 9:16pm EST on November 3 (02:16 UTC on November 4). Both results keep those Senate seats in Republican hands.
Other incumbent senators AP has called winners
Virginia: Mark Warner, Democrat, reelected.
Delaware: Chris Coons, Democrat, reelected.
Rhode Island: Jack Reed, Democrat, reelected.
New Jersey: Cory Booker, Democrat, reelected.
Massachusetts: Ed Markey, Democrat, reelected.
Colorado: John Hickenlooper, Democrat, reelected.
New Mexico: Ben Lujan, Democrat, reelected.
West Virginia: Shelley Moore Capito, Republican, reelected. AP reports that she has won a third Senate term.
Ossoff in Georgia and Moody in Florida, covered above, also retain their Senate seats. These calls are individual state outcomes; they are not a calculation of national Senate control.
What this tells us about control of Congress
At the 9:58pm EST source check on November 3 (02:58 UTC on November 4), AP's live coverage still left control of the House and Senate unresolved. The selected calls above are individual race results, not a national chamber-control call.
An early lead in a running count is not a called race. This report does not add up leading candidates as if they had already won, or treat Senate results as a result for the House.
An AP call and state certification are separate steps
AP says its Decision Team calls a race when the trailing candidates no longer have a path to victory. It may make that assessment before every ballot is counted. A media race call is not an election authority's certification.
North Carolina's election board labels election-night returns unofficial. Its reporting timeline says precinct results can continue arriving through midnight, with dashboard refreshes every five to ten minutes. Eligible overseas, provisional and successfully cured absentee ballots can be added during the later canvass.
Use the linked official state dashboard for running North Carolina returns and AP's live coverage for its race calls. Check the observation time before comparing figures; this article gives no final vote shares or certified totals.
